Currency

The currency in Turkey is the lira with signs “TRY” or ₺.

Which Currency Can Tourists Use in Turkey?

Euros and US Dollars might be accepted in some businesses, especially in tourist areas, but it's not universally accepted. However, foreign visitors can withdraw lira from Turkish ATMs or exchange their local currency at a local bank or exchange office.

Where Can I Change Money in Turkey?

Anyone can easily exchange US and CAD Dollars, into Turkish lira at all banks, and only authorized currency exchange offices. Exchange points at tourist resorts and airports typically do not offer favorable rates. It is better to change your cash in a city or town. Taksim Square and currency exchange bureaus near the ICC offer favorable rate.

What is the Best Currency to Use in Turkey?

Using the local currency, Turkish Lira, for transactions within Turkey not only offers greater convenience but often ensures more favorable exchange rates, enhancing your purchasing power throughout your stay.

Using Travellers Cheques and Credit Cards in Turkey

Avoid using traveller’s cheques in Turkey. Many places do not accept them anymore. Most places in Turkey accept credit cards (Visa, Master, and American Express); notify your credit card supplier that you are travelling to the country.

Using Money in Turkey: ATM / Cash Machines

Known in Turkey as bankamatik, it is far safer and easier to rely on ATMS / cash machines to withdraw money. However, before you depart from your home country, inform your bank that you are travelling to Turkey otherwise they may block your account because of suspicious activity. Some ATMs have the English language option, while others don’t and some cash machines do not give foreign currency.

Most importantly though is that some areas have a high case of fraudsters hanging around machines. Don’t accept help from anyone or let them see your pin number. Also, check the keypad to make sure it is not removable.
